The Terminal
The airport was decommissioned as RAF Castle Donington in 1946 and was purchased by the local authority in 1964, when a major renovation project was initiated. The new facility was opened in April 1965, and renamed East Midlands to reflect the catchment area. It is managed by the Manchester Airport Group.
By 2005 the terminal had outgrown itself and was remodelled, adding drop-off points, an extended arrivals hall and a new pier to reduce walking to the aircraft.
In 2015 the terminal served over 4.5 million passengers, 50 per cent of whom are flown by Ryanair, making the airport the 11th busiest in the UK.
