Mariana Menor, the general manager of Corvera Murcia Airport, recently gave an interview with regional newspaper La Verdad. During the interview, he discussed future plans for continuing to improve Corvera Murcia Airport and adding new flight routes. Menor said he was optimistic about the airport’s performance, noting that 2019 would end with a total of over one million passengers. He also said he anticipated “pleasant surprises in the scheduling for summer 2020”.
Referring to latest reports regarding passenger numbers at Corvera Murcia Airport, Menor added that there were currently more flights than there would have been at San Javier if it had remained open. He also noted that current passenger numbers were higher than had been forecast. Menor said that, although the figures at this stage were 10% lower than last year at San Javier Airport, they were 10% higher than the figures forecast by Aena – the Corvera Murcia Airport management company.
Looking towards the future, Menor said he was optimistic that a new route between Corvera and Barcelona would be established soon. This follows the announcement by Binter Canarias S.A of a a new route from Corvera to Gran Canaria. Based in Spain, Binter Canarias are a regional air carrier offering inter-island services with the Canary Islands as well other Atlantic islands. They also recently announced they would be operating four weekly flights between Corvera Murcia Airport and the Canary Islands.
The minister for tourism in the new Murcia regional government has also praised the plans, expressing optimism about the additional flights and noting that they would provide a boost for tourism on the Costa Cálida.
