International flight services at Corvera Airport Murcia have now almost returned to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. According to a news release from the regional ministry of tourism, the Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia (as it is known in Spain) will be offering a total of 24 routes this spring-summer period, comprising 76 weekly return flights.
Latest forecasts by Aena (the official airport authority) show that Corvera Airport Murcia has 954,344 scheduled seats available until 30 October, representing 96 per cent of the total for the same period in 2019.
Specifically in relation to the UK and Ireland – the region’s main international tourism markets – there will be four additional connections compared with summer 2021: London Stansted, London Luton, East Midlands and Dublin. Two new routes have also been scheduled from Norway: Oslo (beginning on 18 June) and Bergen (19 June).
The other direct summer links with the UK are Bournemouth, Bristol and Glasgow, as well as Birmingham, London Gatwick and Manchester, which have been operating through winter. Three Belgian routes are also currently operational (Antwerp, Brussels Charleroi and Ostend-Bruges) and two with Morocco (Casablanca and Oujda), while a charter service for the Czech Republic is due to start in June.
Nationally, Corvera Airport Murcia is scheduled to launch a service to Palma de Mallorca from 17 April, and at the end of May flights to Menorca, Oviedo and Santander.
In addition, Binter has just announced that it will be using its Canary Islands base as a hub for flights between Murcia and Dakar in Senegal, with the weekly service (Tuesdays) due to start towards the end of July. Binter inaugurated its Murcia-Canaries flights in October 2019.
Meanwhile, the tourism ministry has reported that 35,577 international tourists visited the region in February, 16.1 per cent more than for the same month in 2021. This was the largest increase of any region in Spain, according to figures compiled for the Frontur survey by the National Statistics Institute.
For the first two months of the year, UK tourists represented the largest group of visitors (26,174 and 35.1 per cent of the total), followed by the French (11,641 – 15.6 per cent), the Nordic countries (8,822 – 11.8 per cent) and German visitors (4,777 – 6.4 per cent).
