The King of Spain, King Felipe VI will officially open the Corvera airport on 15th January 2019.
Royal sources confirmed the attendance of the King at the opening of the Murcia International Airport via a communiqué sent to the president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, on 26th December.
On 27th December, Diego Conesa who the general secretary of the PSOE party in the Region of Murcia and delegate of the government in the region, confirmed via his Twitter account that the King would be in attendance. Conesa tweeted a photo of the letter addressed to him from the King’s palace confirming his presence at the inauguration ceremony of the new airport.
With under 3 weeks to go until the airport officially opens, the final touches are being made to the airport which has been a very long time in the making. From speculation and hopes of a new airport 10-15 years ago to finally reaching a very imminent opening date, Corvera is now a reality.
When the airport opens there will be 12 initial destinations and as the airport gathers momentum it is broadly expected that new routes and airlines will want to have a base at Corvera in the coming months and years. The UK, Ireland and Belgium will kick start the connections and the opening of the airport will mark the move from operations at San Javier airport on the Mar Menor inland to Corvera.
