Back in the 1990s, Barcelona was linked by air to Murcia through San Javier Airport. Since then, however, due to low occupancy rates, the connection to Spain’s second largest city has been dormant – until now.
One year after Corvera Murcia Airport was inaugurated (January 2019), and took on San Javier’s commercial flight schedule, Vueling is planning to launch flights to Barcelona three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 30 March, continuing all the way through the summer months.
The regional government has also been lobbying to re-establish air links with Madrid, which were suspended in early 2017, but so far without success.
Currently, the only national route maintained at Corvera is Binter’s Canary Islands service, although last summer Volotea flew to Asturias (Oviedo) and Ryanair to Palma de Mallorca.
Founded by Murcia-born Carlos Muñoz, Volotea is scheduled to resume its Murcia-Asturias route from 30 May (with flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays) and launch a new service to Bilbao from 27 May (flights are also scheduled for Wednesdays and Saturdays).
That just leaves Ryanair to decide if it will resume summer flights between Murcia and the Balearics capital, launched in May 2019.
The regional government also initiated conversations with the Moroccan consul in November last year with a view to launching a route linking Corvera Murcia Airport (officially known as Región de Murcia International Airport) and northern Africa.
New Bus Links with Airport
Another transport initiative announced by the government proposes to provide four new bus connections between Corvera Murcia Airport and Murcia capital city, La Manga-Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar-San Javier-Los Alcázares and Águilas-Mazarrón.
According to the director general for mobility and coastal areas, Marina Munuera, the aim is to “facilitate maximum accessibility for locals and visitors using the airport (and) encourage the use of public transport rather than private vehicles, in order to achieve greater sustainability and transport system efficiency in the medium and long term”.
The successful tender for the service will be required to provide a fleet of at least six buses, as well as dynamic flight information on-board in three languages and Wi-Fi connection.
