Aeronautical engineer Carlos San Martín Castaño will be taking over as general manager of Corvera Airport Murcia in January after presiding over a record increase in the number of flights at Asturias Airport in northern Spain.
The current general manager, Mariano Menor Muñoz, is taking voluntary retirement and he will hand over the management reins to San Martín on 9 January. National operator Aena has announced that two other airports in Spain will also have new general managers from January: Albacete and Logroño.
San Martín has been general manager at Asturias Airport since November 2009. He is also currently Aena’s official representative for regional airports at the European forum of Airports Council International (ACI). Previously, he managed A Coruña Airport from 2007 to 2009, worked in the operations section at Asturias Airport in 2005 to 2006, and was a member of the department of environmental impact studies in the infrastructure planning directorate of Aena’s central services headquarters (2004-2005), “which gave him a global vision of the company where he started in 2001”.
According to Aena, “Under his direction, important investment and infrastructure renovation initiatives have been carried out at Asturias Airport. Furthermore, Carlos San Martín has stood out for coordinating, together with the business sector and local administrations, the largest increase in flights in the history of the Asturian airport, with the incorporation of Volotea and the reopening of Ryanair services. Also under his direction, Asturias Airport received the award for urban and architectural accessibility presented by the Asturias Association for Paraplegics and People with Major Disabilities.”
The outgoing general manager has been in charge at Corvera Airport Murcia since its inauguration in January 2019. During his time at the Aeropuerto Internacional Región de Murcia (as it is officially known), “he led the certification and start-up process of the new airport with diligence and promptness. Once launched, it has offered passengers a high degree of quality in the level of services provided, earning it recognition from ACI, which honoured the airport with the award for ‘Best Hygiene Measures in Europe’.”
