Corvera Murcia Airport has been honoured with the 2019 “Paloma de Turismo” award, presented by the University of Murcia’s tourism faculty. Also sharing the award – officially presented during a gala event held in conjunction with International Tourism Day celebrations – were the Centro de Información Europea and Festival de Teatro de San Javier.
Cristina Sánchez, the regional minister for tourism, youth and sports, was keen to explain the significance of the awards. “The winners are tireless fighters who face adversities without throwing in the towel, with perseverance, hard work and tourism at the forefront of their thoughts as a source of economic, social and cultural development.”
Unquestionably, she noted, the region receives a strong impact from tourism. This was reflected in a year-on-year increase in the number of workers in the sector, 6.6 per cent in the region in 2019 – the second largest rise in Spain and higher than the national average increase (5.2 per cent).
Accompanied by the dean of the university’s tourism faculty, María Isabel Sánchez-Mora, the minister also highlighted the work of the award-winning companies and employees. “The awards are bestowed on those who, through their day-to-day efforts, defend the key objective of ensuring the Murcia region is a place that nobody can avoid visiting and learning more about.” In addition, she stressed, the winners “use the values that co-exist in tourism to achieve their goals.”
